Teachers will now offer services to learners under an arrangement similar to the Nyumba Kumi initiative, Education Secretary Prof. George Magoha has said
He spoke to the press at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development on thursday when he said multi-agency teams will map out the country and design a formula for teachers to offer community service lessons.
"Teachers will teach values to learners under the Nyumba Kumi framework. TSC to issue guidelines on the new plan that will come at no cost to parents," Magoha said.
The ministry is currently offering remote learning through radio, online programmes and television but still there are learners who cant access such programmes. The Ministry of Education and TSC have partnered to give a multi-agency approach in collaboration with chiefs and the Nyumba Kumi initiative to implement a community-based learning approach that will map teachers and learners to offer learning for free. The ten household concept (Nyumba Kumi) was introduced by Ex-Mwai Kibaki through a gazette order in 2013 to foster community policing at the household level. Magoha further noted that the decision was arrived at after observing that many colleges and universities were not ready for reopening. The Ministry will constantly inspect that they meet the laid protocols before they reopen in January 2021.
Magoha alo said that the state had set aside money to be paid as salaries to board of government teachers, security, staff and utilities.
President Uhuru Kenyatta during his national address on monday instructed the Ministry of Education to call for a meeting with all education officials to figure out reopening dates.
Institutions, stadia and all the state owned institutions that had been designated as health facilities by the ministry of health shall be used as isolation and quarantine centres.
The move comes months after the Prof. Magoha had hinted that schools shall reopen in January 2021.
