The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission has hinted at arresting more governors and state officials implicated in graft allegations.
EACC Boss Twalib Mbarak said the move aims at restoring sanity at the devolved units.
Mbarak spoke during the commemoration to mark ten years of the current Constitution.
He has three serving governors on the radar including Nairobi's Mike Sonko, Migori's Okoth Obado and Isiolo's Mohamed Kuti who benefitted from the proceeds of crime.
"We also have on our radar three former governors and in the coming days, we are going to arrest more. We must bring to an end a culture where these governors are running state offices with impunity," Mbarak said. Migori Governor Okoth Obado in court. [p/courtesy] Three former governors Evans Kidero (Nairobi), Ferdinand Waititu (Kiambu) and Daniel Waithaka (Nyandarua) are still in the hooks of the commission that has recovered assets worth Sh20 billion. He blamed the process on the judiciary that is taking long to execute cases of corruption. "The only disadvantage we have is the slow judicial process which takes longer. And this does not mean that EACC is the weak link to graft fight as reported in the media," Mbarak said.
He further accused Kenyans of wanting to see people in court immediately and sent to prisons forgetting that it is a process that takes some time. EACC currently has close to 800 cases involving serving former and serving state officers and lacks course mechanisms to enforce compliance on chapter 6. The announcement comes a day after embattled Migori Governor Okoth Obado was arrested after presenting himself to the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC) offices in Kisii. Obado was alongside his children with whom he is accused of fleecing Migori County Government of Sh73.4 million.
On Thursday last week, EACC detectives raided Kirinyaga governor Anne Waiguru's home and offices in Kirinyaga in search of documents linking the governor to abuse of office and flouting procurement rules.
