According to eyewitnesses, the fighting stemmed from ongoing tensions between rival groups locked in disputes over contested issues, believed to include unresolved land ownership rows. Locals accused authorities of ignoring long-standing grievances, forcing communities to resolve matters violently.
Motorists caught in the chaos were advised to use alternative roads. Some travelers were stranded for hours, with others abandoning their trips altogether. Residents vowed that the unrest would continue until their demands were addressed. That same year, Njoro recorded one of its bloodiest flare-ups. Five people were killed, 40 hospitalized, and 80 others injured. Nearly 200 houses were reduced to ashes, leaving about 3,000 residents homeless.
