Allan Kilavuka: Chief Executive Officer of Kenya Airways Commuters who booked a direct flight from New York to Nairobi have lashed out at struggling national carrier Kenya Airways (KQ) for twice aborting the trip, without giving reasons for the unceremonious cancellations.
Writing to this blog on the morning of Friday, July 1, a frustrated passenger told us it left her heavily dismayed when she showed up at the John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport on Wednesday, June 21, the scheduled day for her flight back home, only to be rudely informed that the departure date had been changed to the following day.
Out of options, most of the travelling group agreed to return to the airport on Thursday, June 30, as instructed by KQ personnel.
Little did they know the circus had just begun.
When they showed up at the JFK airport, the flight had once again been cancelled.
To make matters worse, unlike on the previous day, this time around, KQ did not bother to offer a timeline for the rescheduling of the flight.
They simply postponed it "until further notice".
This has proven to be a major inconvenience to the commuters, some of whom had important events like funerals and weddings to attend back in Kenya. I think KQ just needs to shut down their direct flight from New York to Nairobi. They have now cancelled two flights consecutively and don’t seem to mind what plans their customers had. They cancelled the 29th June 2022 flight and told us we will depart the following day. The next day 30th we get to the JFK and again the flight was cancelled until further notice. Kindly highlight this story as the airline is not giving reasons for cancellations. Some of us had funerals to attend in Kenya, some weddings and some business-related travels. Also, being summer in the US, some of us we coming for holidays with families for kids to interact with their cousins as both schools are closed,” the source writes. As of the publishing of this post, the airline was yet to provide a response to this developing matter.
Our efforts to reach out to the organization for a comment did not bear any fruit as all our calls to their offices went to voicemail.
