Three weeks ago, President Uhuru Kenyatta and Lands Cabinet Secretary Farida Karoney launched the National Land Information Management System, a digitized way to keep land records.
The system was touted as a way to address fraud and corruption cases that have dogged land transactions in the past.
However, currently, there appears to be more backlog than it was in the past with a manual system.
“This digitalization project at Ministry of Lands is not working at all. I paid stamp duty before the launch of the new system Ardhisasa and my lawyer has been to the lands office every day this week to have the documents lodged for registration of a change but no progress at all. Despite the public notice below (attached) it appears the lands staff are doing nothing to clear the backlog of transactions that were already ongoing. Why would the CS not ensure that there was a transition period? Is she aware that Kenyans are greatly inconvenienced?”, one of the system’s users complained. We were told that once the system goes live, Ardhi House will no longer accept manual land documents at the Nairobi Registry as they will do away with manual land transactions.
