Chief Justice David Maraga wants those criticizing Judiciary officials on social media arrested, a letter to the DCI that the editor of this site has seen reads. According to the CJ, some social media users are recklessly besmirching the reputation of officers in the Kenyan Judiciary The Chief Justice has further indicated that reports linking Judiciary officers to the narcotics-linked Akasha family are very malicious. “We find the reports unacceptable because they have the potential to demoralise the officers and undermine the administration of justice in the country,” Maraga's letter to Kinoti read ''Justice Chacha Mwita, who is accused of receiving bribes from Baktash and Abdulsalam Akasha, has never worked in Mombasa or Malindi, Kilifi County where their drug trafficking cases were being heard" The CJ adds “Even his private practice before he joined the Judiciary never took him to those places. We, therefore, find the link to the Akasha case malicious and obviously intended to intimidate the judge and thus influence his decisions in other cases,” Maraga added Maraga also says justice Dora Chepkwony's role in the Akasha's case was very minimal hence would not have received bribes as alleged. "There are people behind social media campaigns against Judiciary and they must be arrested," Maraga tells Kinoti “As we have said before, we do not condone corruption but to have our judicial officers recklessly besmirched is unacceptable,” the Chief Justice said. All laws criminalizing defamation or opinion were declared unconstitutional and it remains a mystery how Kinoti will arrest the socials despite that being illegal. As the Chief Justice, Maraga should know better and accept criticism instead of trying to intimidate Kenyans criticizing a corrupt Judiciary. The Judiciary has been under constant fire with at least two negative trending topics against them, per week.
Ordinarily, those that feel defamed can file a civil case and police cannot be involved in civil matters but it looks like Maraga is trying to intimidate social media users that have been attacking the Judiciary on social media. Hmmmm Here are some sample social media postings
