Insurance Business has a 5 to 6 per cent penetration rate in Kenya and the way the insurance firms are treating clients; it doesn’t help to give the industry a boost. Many Kenyans shy away from taking up optional (medical, life) insurance products because of the stories they’ve heard.
As for owners of motor vehicles, there’s nothing one can do, the General insurance with covers motor vehicles among other assets is required by law.
A client of Britam Insurance Compnay has written to nyakundireport.com complaining about the ‘art of evasion’, in payment of insurance claims.
I have spoken to a number of people asking them about their view on insurance claims. Most of them stated that ‘it always seems like insurance firms look for ways not to pay’.
“My car was involved in an accident last year November. I obtained all the necessary documents from police and filled a claim. I had a comprehensive insurance cover by the time of the accident and it was valid till March 2020”, states the Britam client.
He continues, “After weeks of waiting they sent a letter saying my claim is not admissible since their technical assessment showed that the car rolled due to poor maintenance that caused brake failure. My car had always been serviced and in very good condition. I see this as just an excuse to evade claims. I feel we need to expose them so that clients are informed accordingly before they sign am insurance contract with them. Am not sure if other people have had a similar experience with BRITAM. See the letter attached”, he concludes.
