Enraged residents of Buruburu Phase 2 in Nairobi County have called for authorities to take appropriate legal action against a rogue contractor who failed to properly dispose of the rubble that was excavated during road repairs.
The firm registered as "Bizrate Enterprises" was brought in by the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) to re-carpet the Oldonyo Lengai Road.
But the owner saw a rare opportunity to make a quick buck by pocketing part of the exorbitant disposal fees which he had billed to the General Badi-led entity.
As a result, he dumped all the construction waste on the previously well-manicured lawns and fences which house owners say they had spent time and money to create.
This is not only unlawful under the Nairobi City County laws but also utterly unethical. "Hi Nyakundi, please highlight this. The contractor BIZRATE ENTERPRISES who re-carpeted Buruburu Phase2 Oldonyo Lengai Road refused to dispose the excavated soil, dirt waste and rubble and instead illegally dumped them outside the residential houses, then pocketed the disposal portion of the fees that he billed NMS who had issued the contract. Previously well-manicured lawns, fences which the house owners spent time and money to create and maintain, and the general area’s landscape are destroyed under the excavated piles of rubble and soil mounds. During rains, the dirt and soil from mounds of debris are now washing down into the drainages threatening to cause blockages. According to City By-Laws, it is illegal to dump construction and demolition waste in non-designated areas. These include dumping upon frontage of a house, building or any other premises. The costs of evacuating debris, soil and rubble are factored in all road construction projects and questions arise about where these funds were directed to. Although the road is well done with good sidewalks and clear painting, the overall complete image is dampened by the eyesore of debris mounds all over the roadsides.
