Bill, the Microsoft co-founder and his now ex-wife Melinda, a biochemistry expert announced their separation after almost 3 decades of companion. Soon after the news and buzzing about their most expensive divorce cooled off, Bill and Melinda owned firm Oxitec( a British biotechnology company) released hundreds of millions of genetically modified mosquitoes to test a new experimental way to control the reproduction of ‘Aedes aegypti’, a species that spreads dengue, Zika, yellow fever and other life-threatening infections.
According to Oxitec, they confirmed that the company had already released the first batch of mosquitoes last week in the Florida Keys, located on the southern coast of the state
Oxitec firm said the release was authorised and endorsed by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
The project, supported by local authorities, consists of releasing hundreds of millions of male mosquitoes with a modified gene, called OX5034, that would restrict the survival of the females they mate with.
According to Oxitec, the females would die before growing enough to sting and spread disease, as only they feed on blood, while males feed on nectars. When the new males grow up, they mate with more females, which would further reduce the amount of ‘Aedes aegypti’.
Oxitec stressed that, although this species only represents 4% of the mosquito population in the Florida Keys, it is responsible for almost all disease transmission in the archipelago.
In addition, the company explained that its technology against ‘Aedes aegypti’ was successfully tested in 2019 in the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo, where after only 13 weeks of treatment, they managed to suppress up to 95% of the population of this species. Residents living in the Florida Keys are reported to be against the release of weaponised and supper horny mosquitoes.
The environmental advocates and activists have raised an alarm and the silence from the now separated Gates about the possible hidden negative impact on both humans and other species.
“ I consider it criminal that we are being entangled in this experiment. We risk everything and gain nothing and everything for the benefit of Oxitec,” said resident Meagan Hull during a local council meeting last month. The Gates have been not been having a good time that is presumed to come with their massive wealth.
In 2013, for instance, Bill Gates was recorded stating that he foresees a decade where a viral infection wipes out more than 10 million people.
Since then, there has been what some would consider as a conspiracy theory - I call it alternative truth, about the Gates hand in the current COVID-19 Pandemic.
It is, for those who might not be aware, the 2013 media talk that poked holes into the now-defunct union of the Gates.
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused nearly 6.9 million deaths across the world, more than double the number officially recorded, a new analysis from the University of Washington, DC’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) estimated.
Deaths go unreported as most countries only record those that occur in hospitals or of patients with confirmed infection, the report which came out on Thursday, revealed.
Current reported estimates showed more than 155 million infections worldwide with at least 3.25 million deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University data.
