The British American Tobacco (BAT) has announced that they will let go 19 employees on account of redundancies in their Likoni road branch.

The letter (dated 1st November, 2019) that was anonymously sent to the chief editor of this site shows that BAT is blaming stringent regulations for the layoffs. 'Over the recent years. we have been on a journey to shape a future-fit business aligned to our global operating model and our sustainability agenda. At the same time, the industry has been subject to significant stringent regulations, illicit trade and higher than expected tax increases which have adversely impacted our domestic and export markets sales volumes. This has resulted in a significant reduction in the Nairobi factory production volumes', the letter stated The truth could be different.

BAT has not adhered to many of the stringent rules; cigarettes are still sold to clients in single sticks against the laws of Kenya.

The company has pocketed Members of he National Assembly (MPs) by giving them bribes to look the other way as it continues to flout rules.

In short, BAT is just blaming the stringent regulations n order to continue keeping a fat bottom-line, because for BAT, profits matter more than human welfare . Tax Evaders BAT evades tax by using its multinational corporate structure to pay the minimum amount of corporate tax in countries that most need the revenue and bribing policy makers such as Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) thus robbing the country of vital resources to pay for public services.
