Passengers leave a plane that had to return to Christchurch Airport soon after taking off because a smoke indicator warning light turned on.
A plane had to make an emergency landing in Christchurch after a smoke indicator warning light illuminated.
Emergency services were called to Christchurch International Airport about 2.20pm on Monday.
An Air New Zealand spokeswoman said the plane was flying from Christchurch to Dunedin, leaving Christchurch at 1.56pm.
The plane, an ATR 72, landed back in Christchurch about 2.40pm and passengers disembarked immediately.
The spokeswoman said no source of smoke had been identified by early Monday evening.
Engineers were still inspecting the aircraft.
St John spokesman Gerard Campbell said a first response vehicle went to the scene but was not needed.
