Police officers attached to the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO) are seeking intervention over non payment of their allowances for the last three months, with concerns now being raised over the welfare of officers assigned to protect the state corporation's critical electricity infrastructure.
A complaint received by Nyakundi Report says that police officers attached to KETRACO have gone for three months without receiving their expected allowances, despite continuing to provide security services to the corporation.
The officers are appealing to KETRACO management to address the delay and release the money owed to them, saying they have continued carrying out their duties while waiting for payments that have reportedly remained outstanding.
The complaint specifically names KETRACO Acting Managing Director Eng. Kipkemoi Kibias and Head of Security Services Godfrey Imanene, accusing the two officials of failing to act on the officers' concerns.
Hi Nyakundi, kindly compel KETRACO management to pay police officers attached to them allowances for the last 3 months. The MD Mr. Kibias doesn't bother and so is the security manager called Godfrey Imanene. I am one of the police officers attached to KETRACO, and we are appealing for help over unpaid allowances. We have gone three months without receiving our allowances, yet we continue providing security services to KETRACO facilities every day. Many of us rely on these allowances to cater for transport, food and other daily expenses while on duty. What hurts us most is that we have raised the issue internally, but nothing has changed. We feel abandoned and ignored despite continuing to serve faithfully. We are appealing to the KETRACO management, the Ministry of Energy and the National Police Service to urgently intervene and clear the outstanding allowances for all officers attached to the corporation. Police officers should not be left working for months without allowances that are rightfully due to them Call them out.
KETRACO is a 100 percent government owned state corporation responsible for planning, designing, constructing, operating and maintaining Kenya's high voltage electricity transmission network. Its work involves critical infrastructure, including substations and transmission lines spread across the country.
The corporation's own records show that security is a significant part of its operations. KETRACO has previously stated that it contracts security officers and provides armed police protection at key substations and installations.
The company's current management structure lists Eng. Kipkemoi Kibias as Acting Managing Director, while KETRACO's official records identify Godfrey K. Imanene as the company's Head of Security Services. Imanene has held the security role at KETRACO for years and previously served in the Kenya Police and other security positions before joining the corporation.
The timing also raises questions about the arrangements between KETRACO and the police officers attached to its facilities, including who is responsible for processing their allowances, what payment schedule applies and why the arrears have accumulated for three months.
The officers now want the management to explain what has happened to their allowances and when they should expect payment.
