Dr. David Silverstein, the American cardiologist who served for decades as former President Daniel arap Moi’s personal physician, has died aged 82.

His death was announced Sunday by KANU National Chairman Gideon Moi, who praised Silverstein for the care he provided to his father, describing him as a compassionate doctor who took time to listen and understand his patients.

Silverstein first met Moi at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) in 1977, when Moi was vice president. He became his personal physician in 1983 and served in the role for several decades.

Born in Chicago, Silverstein arrived in Kenya in 1974 after completing his medical training in the United States. He joined the University of Nairobi Medical School and helped establish an early cardiac catheterization laboratory at KNH before heading its cardiology unit.

He later practiced at the Nairobi Hospital and treated several prominent figures, including former South African President Nelson Mandela. Silverstein is survived by his wife, Channa Commanday, and four sons.
