Several people are feared dead after violence broke out during a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) meeting at Nembure Stadium in Manyatta Constituency, Embu County, on Saturday, September 12.

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki was reportedly evacuated as tensions escalated while he led a mobilisation exercise for UDA polling centre officials.

Several vehicles were reportedly torched during the confrontation, including those belonging to journalists covering the event.

Royal Media Services journalist Edwin Murimi escaped unharmed after his vehicle was set ablaze. Wimwaro FM correspondent Murimi wa Mugendi was also safe after his vehicle was burnt, while Getu FM correspondent Kimathi Nto’Miru reportedly suffered a similar loss.

Police Use Teargas As Crowd Attempts To Enter Venue

The confrontation reportedly began after some residents were denied entry, triggering protests and attempts to force their way into the stadium.

Police responded with teargas as officers moved to disperse the crowd and facilitate Kindiki’s evacuation.

Reports also indicated that live ammunition was fired as security personnel attempted to contain the situation.

Kindiki initially posted “Sawa” on social media before later saying the meeting had brought together more than 10,000 UDA polling centre officials to discuss the government’s record and counter misinformation.
