The Kenya National Union of Nurses and Midwives (KNUNM) has called off its nationwide strike after 41 days, ending a prolonged standoff that disrupted healthcare services across the country.

KNUNM Secretary General Seth Panyako announced the immediate suspension of the strike on Wednesday, September 9, following a day-long closed-door meeting with the Council of Governors.

Panyako declared that the strike, which began on July 29, 2026, had officially been called off.

“By the powers conferred to me by the Constitution of the Kenya National Union of Nurses and the Constitution of Kenya, I hereby declare that the strike that commenced on the 29th of July 2026 is hereby called off,” Panyako stated.

He directed nurses who participated in the strike to resume duty immediately to restore normal operations in public hospitals.

Panyako urged union members to return to their stations without delay and within 24 hours at the latest.

The move is expected to ease pressure on hospitals that have struggled with reduced staffing and disrupted services during the 41-day industrial action.
