In a notice to members of the public, the embassy confirmed the closure, stating simply that it would be closed in observance of the holiday, with normal operations expected to resume the following day, Tuesday, September 8.
The closure means Kenyans and American citizens seeking consular services, visa appointments, or other assistance from the embassy will need to wait until Tuesday, when the mission reopens.
What Is Labour Day? ¶
Labour Day is observed annually on the first Monday of September in the United States. It honors the social and economic contributions of American workers and traces its roots to the labor movement of the late 19th century, a period marked by growing worker unrest and demands for better wages and working conditions — including the 1894 Pullman Strike, a major railway dispute that drew federal intervention.
The holiday was formally established on June 28, 1894, when Congress designated the first Monday in September as a national holiday, a measure signed into law by President Grover Cleveland. Early celebrations centered on street parades organized by trade and labor unions, followed by community festivals for workers and their families. Today, the day is typically marked across the US with parades, family gatherings, and sporting events, and unofficially signals the end of the summer season.
It is worth noting that US Labor Day is distinct from International Workers' Day, observed on May 1 in many countries, including Kenya.

The US Embassy in Nairobi, located along United Nations Avenue off Limuru Road, continues to provide consular and other services to Kenyans and US citizens outside of scheduled closures. Its standard working hours run Monday to Friday, though it closes on official US and Kenyan holidays throughout the year.
