Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka has welcomed former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Aisha Jumwa into the party and proposed that she take up the position of Deputy Party Leader.

Kalonzo made the proposal on Friday, August 14, 2026, during a visit to Jumwa at her residence in Kilifi County, days after she resigned from the ruling United Democratic Alliance. He said the proposal would be formally taken to the party headquarters for official announcement.

The move gives Jumwa a senior position in Wiper as the former Kilifi Woman Representative repositions herself ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Jumwa's political shift is particularly significant in Kilifi, where she has maintained a strong grassroots presence and previously contested the governorship on a UDA ticket in 2022. IEBC records show that she was the UDA candidate in that election, running as Aisha Jumwa Katana.

Her departure from UDA came after she publicly accused President William Ruto of sidelining her despite the support she had offered his administration and political campaign. She has since indicated that her next political move would be guided by consultations with people in Kilifi.

A major political calculation for Wiper ¶

Jumwa's proposed elevation is more significant than simply changing parties.

Wiper is seeking to strengthen its presence beyond its traditional political base, and bringing in a well known Coast politician gives Kalonzo an opportunity to expand the party's footprint in a region that has historically played an important role in national coalition politics.

Kalonzo has therefore chosen to offer Jumwa a senior national party position rather than simply receive her as another member.

The proposal also comes at a time when political parties are reorganising ahead of 2027, with politicians moving between parties and negotiating new alliances.

Jumwa's next target could be Kilifi governor ¶

Jumwa's political ambitions in Kilifi are already well established.

She previously sought the governorship in the 2022 election, when she faced then incumbent Amason Kingi and other candidates. Her return to the county's political contest could therefore put the 2027 Kilifi gubernatorial race among the battles to watch.

A Wiper leadership position would give her a national political platform while retaining her strong connection to Coast politics.

The party could also benefit from her grassroots network and experience in both Parliament and government.

The move follows weeks of political courtship ¶

Wiper was not the only political formation interested in Jumwa after her departure from UDA.

The Linda Mwananchi political grouping had also reached out to her, while Siaya Governor James Orengo visited her shortly after her resignation. Wiper subsequently intensified its efforts to bring her into its fold.

Kalonzo's decision to personally visit her and publicly propose the Deputy Party Leader position shows the importance Wiper attaches to her political influence.

What Jumwa brings to Wiper ¶

Jumwa has experience across several levels of Kenyan politics.

She has served as a Member of Parliament, Cabinet Secretary and senior political mobiliser.

Her political journey has also taken her through different parties and alliances, meaning she understands how Kenya's coalition politics operates.

For Wiper, her arrival could help the party build stronger links with Coast voters and potentially attract other politicians who are reassessing their political homes ahead of 2027.

The proposed appointment comes as Kalonzo continues reorganising Wiper ahead of the next election.
