At least 13 pupils were injured after two school buses carrying 101 learners collided in the Riting area of West Pokot County on Tuesday, triggering a major emergency response.

The Kenya Red Cross Society confirmed that six boys and seven girls sustained injuries and were rushed to Kapenguria Referral Hospital for treatment. Emergency teams from West Pokot and neighbouring Turkana counties responded to the scene alongside county ambulances and a Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) ambulance.

The pupils were reportedly travelling for an educational tour when the accident occurred. Unconfirmed reports also indicated that one person may have died, although authorities had not verified the claim by the time of publication.

The Red Cross said evacuation efforts were ongoing, with uninjured learners and teachers moved to a safe holding area while psychosocial support was offered to those affected.

The crash comes as schools begin closing for the August holidays, renewing concerns over road safety during a period of increased travel by learners. Earlier this week, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) urged motorists to ensure vehicles are roadworthy and fully compliant with licensing requirements before transporting students.
