The official website of the President has been hacked, with its homepage replaced by messages targeting President William Ruto and demanding a Bitcoin ransom.
A review of the website on Saturday, July 18, showed the official content had been removed and replaced with unauthorised messages, including a cryptocurrency wallet address and a threat to release unspecified information unless payment was made. The attackers reportedly demanded about Ksh8 million worth of Bitcoin.
State House confirmed it was aware of the cyberattack, saying its ICT team was working to restore the website and investigate the breach. Authorities have not disclosed who was behind the attack or whether any sensitive government data was compromised. The incident raises fresh concerns over cybersecurity and the protection of critical government digital infrastructure.
