As Nairobi continues to grow, mixed-use neighbourhoods where residential homes coexist with entertainment venues have become increasingly common. While businesses such as clubs, lounges, and bars contribute to the local economy and create employment opportunities, they are also expected to operate in a manner that respects the rights of surrounding residents.
Noise pollution remains one of the most common complaints in densely populated urban areas. Excessive music, public address systems, and late-night entertainment can significantly affect residents' quality of life, particularly families with children, students, elderly persons, and workers who need adequate rest before reporting to work the following day.
Kenyan regulations require entertainment establishments to observe noise control guidelines and ensure that their operations do not unreasonably interfere with neighboring residential communities. When businesses fail to strike this balance, disputes often arise between residents seeking peace and operators seeking to maximize business hours.
Hello Nyakundi,
Kindly hide my identity.
I am a resident of Kawangware and would like to raise concerns regarding a club known as Volcano Gardens.
As I write this, it is almost midnight, yet the music from the establishment is still being played at an extremely high volume.
What makes the situation frustrating is that there are many residential houses located directly behind and around the club. Families, children, students, and working people are all expected to endure the noise late into the night despite needing rest.
This is not an isolated incident.
The loud music has become a regular occurrence and many residents feel helpless because the noise continues for hours without consideration for the people living nearby.
I understand that businesses have a right to operate and earn a living.
However, residents also have a right to peace, rest, and a healthy living environment.
There should be a balance between entertainment and the well-being of the surrounding community.
I am therefore appealing to the management of Volcano Club, the Nairobi County Government, NEMA, and other relevant authorities to look into the matter and ensure that noise regulations are observed.
We are not asking for the business to be shut down.
We are simply asking for consideration and compliance with noise control requirements so that residents can enjoy their homes without being subjected to excessive noise late into the night.
Concerned Kawangware Resident.
