The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has finally addressed growing confusion over the leadership of its Youth League, ending speculation that political activist Kasmuel McOure holds the top youth position.
Yesterday’s publication circulated at the party’s 20th anniversary in Mombasa named McOure as the Youth League President, creating a flurry of questions about the party’s official leadership.
ODM quickly moved to correct the misinformation, confirming that Johnmark Ketorah remains the legitimate Youth League President, and called on members to ignore misleading claims circulating in the newsletter.

ODM Youth Leadership Faces Misinformation Challenge
At the heart of the controversy is a newsletter distributed during ODM’s anniversary celebrations in Mombasa on Friday, November 14, 2025. The publication listed McOure among other leaders in key positions, presenting him as the party’s Youth League President.
ODM responded on Saturday morning, releasing a statement that directly refuted the claims.
| Name | Position | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Johnmark Ketorah | Youth League President | Official |
| Kasmuel McOure | Youth Activist | No official leadership role |
“The President of the ODM Youth League is Honourable Johnmark Ketorah. Ignore any publication circulating containing misleading information on the same,” read the party’s official statement.
The move was seen as crucial to maintain order and clarity within the party, especially with the Youth League being a vital part of ODM’s strategy to mobilise young voters ahead of upcoming elections.
Kasmuel McOure’s Role in ODM
While Kasmuel McOure has been a vocal activist and a known supporter of ODM, he has never formally held the Youth League Presidency. In 2024, he was appointed by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga to assist in youth mobilization through the party’s youth and student league programs.
His work has largely focused on outreach and advocacy, helping the party engage with young voters and shape policies that reflect their priorities. Despite this, McOure has yet to secure a formal leadership role within the party hierarchy.
Johnmark Ketorah’s Continued Leadership
Johnmark Ketorah, the current ODM Youth League President, was officially appointed by the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) in 2016. His nomination followed a recommendation by fellow youth league members, recognizing his commitment to advancing ODM’s youth agenda.
Since taking office, Ketorah has been central to organizing youth support for the party, developing campaigns, and mentoring young members. His leadership has been marked by stability and continuity within the Youth League, a crucial factor for ODM as it consolidates its position nationally.
| Year | Event | Impact |
|---|---|---|
| 2016 | Johnmark Ketorah appointed Youth League President | Strengthened youth mobilization |
| 2024 | Kasmuel McOure appointed youth activist by Raila Odinga | Outreach and advocacy |
| 2025 | ODM clarifies misinformation | Reinforces official hierarchy |
Party Leadership Restructuring
The clarification of ODM Youth Leadership comes shortly after broader changes within the party’s senior leadership. The National Executive Council recently appointed Siaya Senator Oburu Onginga as the party leader. The council also approved Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir, Kisii Governor Simba Arati, and Vihiga Senator Geoffrey Osoti as deputy party leaders.
These moves reflect ODM’s commitment to strengthening its leadership and maintaining internal cohesion. By swiftly correcting misinformation on the Youth League, the party aims to prevent confusion and preserve confidence among its members, especially the youth, who form a crucial voting bloc.
ODM’s statement serves as a reminder that rumors and unofficial publications will not dictate party hierarchy. With Johnmark Ketorah firmly at the helm, the Youth League continues to play a central role in ODM’s strategy to engage and mobilize young Kenyans ahead of future political contests.
