Oburu Oginga Confirmed as ODM Party Leader in Historic Transition
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has officially confirmed Dr. Oburu Oginga as the new party leader.
This major political development was approved by the party’s National Governing Council (NGC).
Indeed, this confirmation ends the transition period for ODM.
It follows the sad passing of the party’s founder and long-time leader, the late Raila Odinga, on October 15.
Oburu, who is the elder brother of the late leader, had been serving in an interim role since October 16.

A New Chapter for ODM
The NGC meeting took place in Mombasa.
This location is important because it is where the party is holding events for its 20th anniversary.
The confirmation of Oburu as party leader signals that the party is ready to move forward.
And the new leader quickly gave an assurance.
He told delegates that his main job is to keep the party strong and united. “We shall not agree to swallow,” Oburu stated.
He wants ODM to remain a powerful, independent voice in Kenyan politics.
Additionally, he stressed that a strong party has a say in national talks.
Key Leadership Changes
The NGC also approved other important changes in the party structure.
These moves aim to strengthen the ODM leadership across different regions:
Deputy Party Leaders: Three governors were confirmed for these roles:
Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir (Mombasa Governor)
Simba Arati (Kisii Governor)
Godfrey Osotsi (Vihiga Senator)
National Chair: Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga was confirmed as the National Chairperson.
Other Leaders: Other key roles were filled, including the appointment of Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga as Deputy Organising Secretary.
These appointments will officially take effect after they are approved by the party’s top decision-making body, the National Delegates Convention (NDC).
The changes show ODM’s effort to stay strong and maintain its principles under new leadership.
