Kenya Re CEO Hillary Wachinga is at the center of a scandal. His two alleged lovers, Steffy Wangu and Faith Mbaire—both employed at the firm under questionable circumstances—recently exchanged blows at a private Nairobi club.
The dramatic fight has exposed deep-rooted allegations of corruption, sexual exploitation, and financial mismanagement.
A Scandalous Confrontation Turns Ugly
Steffy Wangu stormed into the venue after learning that Wachinga was entertaining Mbaire. Furious, she confronted them, forcing Mbaire to flee.
Witnesses were shocked when Wangu publicly accused Wachinga of sexually exploiting female employees, recruiting them after intimate encounters, and even flying them abroad on official trips.
Wangu further claimed that Wachinga engaged in unprotected sex, making him vulnerable to sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Unable to handle the humiliation, Wachinga fled, leaving Wangu to continue her tirade.
Corruption, Nepotism, and Abuse of Power
The chaos comes amid serious complaints filed against Wachinga with the Commission on Administrative Justice (CAJ). He faces allegations of sexual exploitation, nepotism, tender manipulation, and financial mismanagement.
Reports say he lures interns with gifts, including underwear, before exploiting them. Investigations by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and the Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA) are also underway.
Sources reveal that Wachinga has hired several relatives, including Josephine Maina (Audit Office), Brian Kungu (Corporate Affairs), and Laura Cheruto Mokotei (Risk Department), who is allegedly related to Wesley Kibet.
Fraudulent Deals and Financial Mismanagement
Wachinga allegedly manipulated the 2023 Balanced Scorecard, securing a Ksh 24 million bonus. Insiders claim he awarded a Ksh 29 million audit contract to PwC without proper guidelines.
He also approved a Ksh 100 million CEO summit without budget clearance and funneled a Ksh 40 million training deal to Strathmore University, where he lectures, pocketing kickbacks.
Additional accusations include:
- Rigging tenders to benefit allies while blocking independent vendors.
- Controlling the board chair to bypass full board approvals.
- Violating company policy by sending interns on international trips.
- Hiring personal bodyguards using public funds.
Meanwhile, Kenya Re’s loan book continues to expand unchecked, and per diem expenses are skyrocketing.
As investigations intensify, Wachinga’s future hangs in the balance, with growing calls for his resignation or prosecution.
