Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, a well-known ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, shocked many when he warmly received President William Ruto during his tour of Kieni.
The governor, who has been vocal in his criticism of Ruto’s administration, seemed to be shifting ground, sparking speculation about his political allegiance.

Mutahi Kahiga’s Unexpected Welcome
Viral photos captured Kahiga greeting Ruto’s entourage with smiles and engaging in what appeared to be friendly conversations.
This was a stark contrast to his previous stance, where he strongly opposed the government’s policies and aligned himself with Gachagua’s rebellion against Ruto.
Public reactions were swift, with many questioning if Kahiga was abandoning his political camp. In response, the governor took to Facebook to dismiss the speculation.
“I have noted frenzied interest in my attendance of the President’s functions in Kieni,” Kahiga stated. “Do not read too much into these photos. The Presidency must be respected.”
He went further to confirm that he would host Ruto again, emphasizing his official duty as governor.
“The Governor of Nyeri received The President of the Republic of Kenya in Kieni. The Governor of Nyeri will still receive the president on Saturday in Nyeri Town and Othaya.”
Is Ruto’s Mt. Kenya Tour Winning Back Support?
President Ruto’s tour of Mt. Kenya comes at a critical moment. With Gachagua’s impeachment deepening political rifts, Ruto is working to secure the region’s support.
His extensive visit covers Laikipia, Nyeri, Nyandarua, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Kiambu.
On Monday, Ruto met with several Mt. Kenya governors at State House, Nairobi. The meeting focused on economic development, but political undertones were evident.
Present were Cecily Mbarire (Embu), Anne Waiguru (Kirinyaga), Kimani Wamatangi (Kiambu), Joshua Irungu (Laikipia), Muthomi Njuki (Tharaka Nithi), Irungu Kang’ata (Murang’a), Kiarie Badilisha (Nyandarua), and Isaac Mutuma (Meru). Notably absent? Mutahi Kahiga.
What’s Next for Kahiga?
Kahiga’s presence at Ruto’s events raises critical questions. Is he recalibrating his political stance, or was it merely a duty-bound gesture? With tensions high in the Mt. Kenya region, his next move could redefine local power dynamics.
As Ruto courts the region and Gachagua fights to maintain his grip, all eyes remain on Kahiga. Will he stay loyal to Gachagua’s camp, or is he testing the waters for a realignment? One thing is clear—political tides in Mt. Kenya are shifting, and Kahiga is right at the center of it all.
