Francis Atwoli has secured unanimous backing from Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU-K) officials to seek a sixth term as secretary general in the August 2026 elections.
Therefore, setting him up for a record 25 years at the helm of Kenya’s labor movement if re-elected.
The veteran trade unionist received the endorsement during a high-level meeting with 42 general secretaries from affiliated unions.
Additionally, he pledged to front him as a joint candidate in a show of solidarity and continuity.

Unanimous Endorsement Ahead of August Polls
Atwoli hosted the 42 union leaders for a consultative luncheon in Nairobi.
Where they resolved to back him “as a team and in solidarity” in the forthcoming COTU-K elections scheduled for August.

In a statement shared on his X (Twitter) account, Atwoli said the decision reflected unity within the federation as it prepares for a critical electoral season amid economic strain.
And ongoing talks on workers’ welfare.
The move significantly narrows the space for any serious challenger, effectively clearing his path to another term.
A Quarter Century at the Helm
Atwoli has served as COTU-K secretary general since August 2001, having successfully defended the seat in multiple elections and becoming one of Kenya’s longest-serving labour leaders.
If he wins again in August 2026, his tenure will stretch to 25 years.
Therefore, cementing his status as a towering figure in the country’s trade union history.
Before taking over COTU, he rose through the ranks as a shop-floor activist and later general secretary of the Kenya Plantation and Agricultural Workers Union.
Additionally, it gives him deep roots in the labor movement.
Influence Beyond Kenya’s Borders
Under Atwoli’s stewardship, COTU has evolved into an influential social and political force, shaping wage negotiations, labour legislation, and national debates on workers’ rights.
His clout extends internationally: in 2025, he was unanimously re-elected Deputy President of the Commonwealth Trade Union Group (CTUG).
Also, representing millions of workers across more than 40 countries.
He has also served as a titular member on the International Labour Organization (ILO) governing body, making him one of the longest-serving African voices in global labour forums.
Debate Over Longevity and Leadership
While the endorsement underscores trust from union leadership, it also rekindles debate about leadership renewal within COTU, given Atwoli’s more than two-decade grip on the position and his advanced age in his mid-70s.
Supporters argue that his experience, networks, and vocal defense of workers, especially against exploitation by employers, including foreign investors, remain invaluable at a time of economic uncertainty.
Critics, however, question whether such prolonged tenure leaves enough room for generational change and new ideas in Kenya’s labour leadership.
