On June 8, 2020, Majid Al Futtaim, the operator of Carrefour Supermarkets in Kenya, announced a charity initiative to support underprivileged families in Nairobi whose livelihoods have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The initiative, which aligns with the company's long-term commitment to health and wellbeing, involves donating over 33 tonnes of staple food items worth more than Sh2.5 million to families in need over the next couple of months.
Through a partnership with the Kenya Red Cross, the donation is being made to support a two-month long food distribution campaign targeting deprived neighbourhoods in Nairobi.
Carrefour has already donated over 5,000 food hampers, comprising essential items such as maize meal, rice, ndengu, and baking flour, just three weeks into the campaign.
Country Manager of Carrefour Kenya at Majid Al Futtaim Retail, Franck Moreau, encouraged customers to join the cause by donating food hampers when they shop at any of Kenya's seven Carrefour stores.
“We’re grateful to our customers for their generosity and help in upholding a spirit of togetherness during difficult times,” Moreau said.
Dr Asha Mohammed, Secretary General of the Kenya Red Cross Society, added: “Our partnership with Majid Al Futtaim and the involvement of the community serves to ease some of the immediate pressure for those most affected as we look to find long term solutions.”
