On June 6, 2020, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel announced that the country had successfully contained the spread of Covid-19, with no reported deaths for the eighth consecutive day.

According to Diaz-Canel, the country's strategy to combat the pandemic has been effective, with only 244 active cases remaining out of a total of 2,200 reported cases.

However, the Cuban leader warned that the country cannot become complacent, citing a recent spike in new infections since May 28.

"This was a week in which the number of active cases and the number of daily cases increased in comparison to the previous weeks in which, as already announced, we were at the tail end of this epidemic," Diaz-Canel said.

"We need to keep focusing on how we're going to eliminate the residues that remain, especially those associated with the incompetence or poor functioning of any institution, which give rise to events that can provoke a rebound," he added.

As the country prepares to lift its lockdown, schools and borders remain closed, public transport has been suspended, and the wearing of masks in public is mandatory.

With an economy largely dependent on tourism and external trade, Cuba can ill afford to remain in lockdown for much longer, as the prolonged restrictions have worsened the social situation for millions of Cubans.
