As the English Premier League prepares to resume on June 17, the English Football League (EFL) has confirmed two new cases of COVID-19 among players and staff associated with Championship clubs.

According to the EFL, 1,179 players and staff from 24 Championship clubs underwent testing between June 3 and June 6, with two individuals testing positive for the virus.

Players and staff who have tested positive will now self-isolate in line with the guidelines provided by the EFL, while those who have tested negative will be permitted to enter training ground facilities.

One of the positive cases was confirmed at Barnsley FC, with the club stating that the individual is 'safe' and 'remains upbeat.'

The EFL has reaffirmed its commitment to making regular and relevant announcements regarding the testing programme to support competition integrity and transparency.

However, the League has stated that it will not provide specific details about the clubs or individuals involved.

It's worth noting that the Championship is set to resume on June 20, three days after the English Premier League makes a comeback.

On a related note, the EFL had previously confirmed zero positive cases after 135 players and staff from League One underwent testing last week.

Additionally, one person tested positive after 132 players and staff were examined in League Two.

June 7, 2020, Barnsley FC tweeted: 'We can confirm that one member of staff has tested positive for the COVID-19 virus following the last round of testing. The individual is safe and remains upbeat.'
