On June 7, 2020, regional police commander Rashid Yakub and regional commissioner John Elungata received a report from Haki Africa director Hussein Khalid on extrajudicial killings and police brutality at the Coast.
The report, which was carried out from March to May 31 in six coastal counties, revealed that security officers have been linked to 20 deaths in the Coast since the declaration of dusk-to-dawn curfew in early April.
According to the report, the county with the highest cases is Mombasa, followed by Kwale, Taita Taveta, Kilifi, Lamu, and Tana River, which had the lowest number of cases.
Mr. Khalid called for immediate investigations and prosecution of those found culpable, citing the killing of an eight-year-old girl in Bamba, Kilifi, who was defiled and later strangled.
Regional Commissioner John Elungata promised that the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) and other government agencies probing the incidents will make sure justice is served.
Mr. Khalid also criticized security officers for doing little to bring the culprits to book, saying that the Covid-19 measures have negated the enjoyment of human rights.
