On June 8, 2020, the Kenyan government deployed a special anti-narcotics and anti-terror police squad to Isiolo County to help contain the growing menace of drug trafficking.

The operation, led by the Police Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) and Anti-Terror Unit (ATPU), aims to crack down on cartels operating between the border town of Moyale and Nairobi.

Elite squads from the ANU and ATPU have been stationed in Isiolo town to monitor the activities of drug dealers behind the trafficking of popular Ethiopian bhang into the country.

According to ATPU boss John Gachomo, the units will not only focus on fighting drug trafficking but also look into smuggling of contraband goods from neighboring countries, human smuggling, and terrorism activities.

Patrols will be stepped up in the sub-counties of Isiolo, Merti, and Garba Tula to combat the growing threat.
