On June 5, 2020, Deputy President William Ruto was installed as the Kalenjin leader following the death of former President Daniel Arap Moi in a ceremony attended by several leaders.

The ceremony, which lasted for one hour, was held at Kapsisiywa village in Nandi County and blended traditional Kalenjin customs with Christian and biblical symbols and prayers.

According to Reverend Baasi, the traditional ceremony was attended by Nandi Governor Stephen Sang, Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago, and Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei, among others.

Reverend Baasi refuted claims that the ceremony was a traditional cleansing ritual, saying, 'The clan is not associated with sorcery and witchcraft as claimed on social media.'

He added that the Kalenjin kingship is now with the deputy president, and that the sacred Kalenjin leadership regalia was passed to Dr. Ruto during the ceremony.
