On Saturday, June 6, 2020, Dr. Boni Khalwale, the outspoken former Kakamega Senator, convened an illegal gathering at the Kakamega county's airstrip, sparking a confrontation with the police.
Police stormed the venue, hurling teargas to disperse the crowd, and engaging Khalwale in a running battle. The incident has left many questioning his suitability to lead the county.
According to eyewitnesses, the crowd that gathered during Khalwale's address were forced to flee and hide in nearby maize plantations as police officers relentlessly pursued them.
Dr. Khalwale was quoted as saying, 'I am so angry after I learned that the government intended to take food to Navakholo and not Shinyalu… We can accept that the state brings trucks of relief food to give to politicians who are not close to their constituents.'
He further accused former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary-General Francis Atwoli of dividing Western Kenya.
Dr. Khalwale's recent antics have raised questions about his fitness to lead the county. Perhaps it is time for him to consider a career in the medical field, where his skills as a doctor could be put to better use, especially in the wake of the Corona virus.
As the people of Kakamega look to the future, they are increasingly realizing that Prof. Philip Kutima, the Deputy Governor of Kakamega county, is the best candidate suited to continue the legacy of unparalleled growth and development record of Governor Oparanya.
