Kenya's COVID-19 cases have surged to 2,767, with 167 new cases detected on Sunday, June 7, 2020, according to Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe.

Speaking on Sunday, Kagwe attributed the high number of cases to targeted mass testing, which has been undertaken by the government.

‘We have the highest cases today (Sunday) and this is because of the targeted mass testing which we have been undertaking,’ Kagwe said.

The disease has spread to 36 counties out of 47, with Nairobi leading the pack with 54 cases, followed by Mombasa with 47 cases, Busia with 28 cases, Kiambu with 14 cases, and Uasin Gishu with 11 cases.

Busia has been identified as a hotspot, with all 28 cases at the Busia border being truck drivers.

‘We are going to have direct intervention in Busia from the national government because of the rising numbers,’ Kagwe said.

46 patients were also discharged, raising the number of recoveries to 752, while cases of fatalities increased to 84, after a patient succumbed.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has since reviewed some of the measures to combat the virus, including the dusk to dawn curfew, which will now start at 9pm to 4am.

The restrictions in Nairobi, Mombasa, and Mandera remain in force for 30 more days, with Eastleigh and Mombasa’s Old Town now open after a 30-day lockdown.
