Kenya's athletes are set to benefit from improved training facilities after the government announced the restart of stalled stadium construction projects.
Construction works on Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Uasin Gishu and Kamariny Stadium in Elgeyo Marakwet, which were halted three years ago, are expected to resume soon.
According to Sports Chief Administrative Secretary Hassan Noor Hassan, the government has released funds to complete the projects, with Kipchoge Keino Stadium expected to be completed within the next seven months.
"We were experiencing a cash crunch that forced the building works to stall, but now that has been sorted out as the funds will next week be given to the contractors who are ready to start the construction," Hassan Noor Hassan stated.
He added that the government has released billions of shillings to complete the projects, which will provide world-class training facilities for athletes.
"The contractor has assured us that Kipchoge Keino stadium will be complete within the next seven months. We have already signed an MoU and we expect the construction to be started as soon as the funds are made accessible to the contractor," Hassan Noor Hassan stated.
Construction of the stadiums was initially announced in 2013, but stalled midway, forcing athletes to look for alternative training grounds.
