On June 7, 2020, Uganda's Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda announced he would self-isolate for an unspecified period after people he was in contact with tested positive for coronavirus.
As a close ally of President Yoweri Museveni, Rugunda has been a regular presence at televised briefings and cabinet meetings held at the premier's offices in Kampala.
“Friends, I have gone into self-isolation after some of my contacts tested positive for Covid-19. My own test is negative, however, I have taken this decision as health recommended measure,” Rugunda posted on social media.
Following Rugunda's announcement, the Ministry of Health confirmed it would commence mandatory tests for ministers and staffers in the premier's office, with a second round of testing scheduled for 14 days later.
