On June 7, 2020, a new poll was released, revealing that 57% of Kenyans want the night curfew to remain in place until COVID-19 is fully contained.
The study, conducted by Infotrack, found that Kenyans expressed concerns about a potential health crisis due to the increased number of infections, which had reached 2,600 by Saturday, with 83 deaths.
President Uhuru Kenyatta extended the nationwide night curfew from 7 pm to 9 pm, effective from June 7, 2020, and ending at 4 am from the current 5 pm. However, he maintained the cessation of movement in Nairobi, Mombasa, and Mandera counties due to higher infection rates.
Despite the concerns, 30% of Kenyans believed that the curfew should be done away with to allow for free movement of people and rescue the economy.
With the rising cases of infections, 64% of Kenyans were worried about the situation, citing the lack of medical equipment and hospital beds as a major concern.
The failure to adhere to prevention measures stipulated by the government was identified as the leading hindrance in the fight against COVID-19.
President Kenyatta is set to meet with Governors on Wednesday to review the effectiveness of the coronavirus containment measures and counties' preparedness in managing the situation.
