On June 7, 2020, the UN Security Council made a significant move to support Sudan's transition by unanimously passing two resolutions.

The first resolution established a new political mission, called UNItams, to assist in the transitional phase in Sudan for an initial period of 12 months.

The mission, drafted by Germany and Britain, aims to support the transitional authority in Sudan and help the peace process in the country.

According to the resolution, the Secretary-General of the UN, António Guterres, is requested to quickly appoint an envoy to head the new mission.

Additionally, the second resolution extended the mandate of the United Nations and the African Union UNAmid in the Darfur region until December 31, 2020.

The decision comes after Sudan Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok asked the UN in January to establish a political mission under Chapter VI to support the peace process in the country.

Since the overthrow of President Omar al-Bashir in April 2019, Sudan has been in a political transition, with a mixed military and civilian government governing the country for a transitional period of three years.
