Published on June 7, 2020, the Ministry's Chief Administrative Secretary, Rachel Shebesh, has called on Members of Parliament to allocate more funds towards the production of clean potato seeds.
The demand for disease-free potato seeds has increased significantly, and the production unit at Tumaini National Youth Service in Nyandarua County cannot meet the demand.
Shebesh noted that the project, which uses aeroponics technology, has been able to increase its production by 4% since its establishment a year ago.
The CAS emphasized that the allocation of more funds will go a long way in boosting the production of certified potato seeds and helping to realize President Uhuru Kenyatta's 'Big Four' agenda in food security.
Shebesh also called on the County administration practicing potato production to form a good working relationship with the unit to boost local potato production.
Commanding officer at Tumaini NYS, Kennedy Nyakang'o, explained that the use of certified seeds will see farmers reap big, as one certified tuber can produce 16 tubers, unlike a recycled one which produces 3-6 tubers when planted.
