On June 5, 2020, Commissioner of Police Wachira Mathenge, a former escort of President Mwai Kibaki, passed away in Nyeri County.

Mathenge, who was serving as a Commissioner of Police in charge of logistics in the Eastern Region, Embu, collapsed abruptly in his house in Chaka at 9pm and was declared dead on arrival at Outspan Hospital in Nyeri County.

According to a police report filed at Chaka Police Post in Nyeri County, the cause of death has not yet been established, but it is highly suspected to be a heart attack, as he had not complained of any illness before collapsing.

Deputy President William Ruto mourned the officer, describing him as a dedicated and exceptional officer who was dependable, approachable, and took pride in his work.

“He was dependable, approachable, took pride in his work and endeavoured to put things right. Our heartfelt condolences and sympathy to Mathenge’s family, friends and the wider Police fraternity. Rest In Peace,” Ruto said.
