Published on June 7, 2020, a rent dispute between a tenant and his landlady in Umoja II estate has led police to uncover the murder of two women in Nairobi.

A 42-year-old wedding planner, David Migwi, was kicked out by his landlady, Nancy Wanja, at the end of May after a disagreement over rent. Despite being evicted, Migwi managed to access the house to remove some of his personal belongings, leaving behind a blue water tank and bales of wedding ceremony décor.

It was when the landlady contracted three men to clean the house that they realised there was a foul smell. However, they did not bother to check the source of the smell and just removed garbage from the house. But when some residents noted the stench and called the police, human body parts were found among the garbage.

Police have produced in court an affidavit implicating Migwi in the murder of 36-year-old Penina Wairimu in 2019. Wairimu was reported missing at the Buru Buru Police Station on April 29, last year. Three days later, police discovered severed body parts that were strewn in different parts of the city, including Ladhies Road, where limbs and torso packed in a sack were found.

Other body parts were recovered at the Dandora dumpsite. Investigators have retraced Wairimu’s last moments to a city club where she was seen leaving in the company of a man on the night of April 26, 2019, at around 9.45 pm.
