On June 7, 2020, President Uhuru Kenyatta lifted the cessation of movement order into and out of Eastleigh and Old Town, effective 4am, bringing an end to a month-long lockdown.

For over a month, businesses in Eastleigh had been on standstill after an executive order banned entry and exit due to the then rising number of people who were testing positive for Covid-19.

Geoffrey Mosiria, the boss of Pumwani Hospital, welcomed the decision, stating that it was timely especially for locals in Eastleigh.

“I support the move because locking them in one place was really affecting them,” he told Nairobi News on phone.

On social media, Kenyans shared their reactions to the news, with some joking about the impending border crossing.

“Eastleigh and Old town tomorrow morning…” tweeted @sa3adun, while @raphael_voste posted “evile watu wa eastleigh wamengoja kwa boder”.
