On June 6, 2020, President Uhuru Kenyatta gave the ministries of Interior and Health seven days to work out modalities and protocols for the reopening of places of worship.
Religious organizations had written to the President, requesting a review of the measures and promising to adhere to the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health.
Interior CS Fred Matiang'i and Health CS Mutahi Kagwe had met with religious leaders to discuss how to proceed with religious activities in the event the government agreed to relax some of its guidelines.
According to the President, the ministries must constitute an Inter-Faith Council within seven days to work out the modalities and protocols for reopening places of worship.
The government had suspended all public gatherings, sporting events, open-air religious meetings, and other large public events in March after the first coronavirus case was confirmed in the country.
