June 6, 2020 - Nairobi, Kenya - President Uhuru Kenyatta has extended the ban on all forms of gatherings, including bars, for 30 more days, citing a spike in coronavirus infections in Kenya.
The ban, which was initially implemented in March, has been credited with helping to contain the spread of the virus in the country.
According to the President, Kenya does not meet the necessary thresholds for relaxation, including a reduction in the number of infections, as advised by health professionals and public health practitioners.
As a result, social and public gatherings will remain restricted, with funerals and weddings limited to close family members and religious activities conducted online.
The President also extended the cessation of movement into and out of the Nairobi Metropolitan Area, Mombasa, and Mandera for 30 more days, and adjusted the nationwide curfew timings to start at 9pm and end at 4am.
However, the cessation of movement into and out of Eastleigh, Mombasa's Old Town, Kilifi, and Kwale counties has been lifted, as infection rates have slowed down in these areas.
The new measures take effect on June 7, and learners will have to wait until September for the resumption of studies, as directed by the President.
