President Uhuru Kenyatta has announced the lifting of the lockdown in Eastleigh, Mombasa's Old Town, Kilifi, and Kwale, effective from 4 am on Sunday, June 7.

The decision comes after the successful containment of the COVID-19 disease in the counties of Kilifi and Kwale, according to the President.

Speaking from State House on Saturday, June 6, President Kenyatta acknowledged the government's swift action in setting up preventive measures against the virus since the first case was reported in March.

He encouraged Kenyans to continue complying with the measures, saying, "This disease is beatable if we work together; listen to and apply the regulations, guidelines and protocols issued by the Ministry of Health and keep our eyes on slaying the enemy."

However, Nairobi Metropolitan will remain under lockdown with restricted movement in and out of Nairobi County, which continues to record high infection rates.

President Kenyatta also extended the nationwide night curfew for 30 more days, starting from 9 pm to 4 am to enable businesses to thrive for more hours.

Additionally, schools in Kenya will re-open at the beginning of September after closing for five months due to COVID-19.

President Kenyatta directed the Education Ministry to consult with Health experts to come up with a new calendar by mid-August, with the aim of resuming progressive normalcy in the education sector by September 1.
