On June 6, 2020, President Uhuru Kenyatta announced the extension of the nationwide curfew and lockdown for 30 days from Sunday, 2020, in a press conference at State House.

The new directives include a 30-day extension of the curfew, which will now run from 9 PM to 4 AM, and the cessation of movement in and out of Nairobi Metropolitan, Mombasa, and Mandera Counties for 30 more days.

However, the restriction of movement in Kilifi and Kwale Counties has been lifted, and residents of Eastleigh in Nairobi and Old Town in Mombasa will be allowed to move to other areas as from Sunday.

According to the President, the decision to extend the restrictions was made due to the ongoing rise in COVID-19 cases in Kenya, with over 2,600 cases reported at the time.

He emphasized that the country's health facilities would not be able to handle a spike in cases, citing the example of Siaya and Busia Counties whose facilities are already overwhelmed.
