As Kenya grapples with the economic and social impact of the coronavirus pandemic, the United Green Movement Party has urged President Uhuru Kenyatta to ease the restrictions imposed in March.

Speaking in Mombasa on Saturday, just hours before the President's national address, Secretary General Hamissa Zaja said the containment measures have created hardships that are being felt across the country.

According to Zaja, the restrictions, including the nationwide night time curfew and the cessation of movement in and out of Nairobi, Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi and Mandera counties, cannot be sustained indefinitely.

“The restrictions cannot be sustained indefinitely and should be eased in a bid to revive the country’s crumbling economy,” Zaja said.

She emphasized that the emphasis on curbing the spread of the virus should not come at the expense of the socio-economic fabric of the country.

With indications that 80 percent of the Covid-19 infections in the country were only mild cases, Zaja argued that there should be no justification to continue restricting the people.
