On June 6, 2020, Makueni County Government received Ksh119 million from the National Government to combat the COVID-19 pandemic in the region.

According to Governor Prof. Kivutha Kibwana, the funds will be used to procure personal protective equipment, isolation and treatment, surveillance, trainings, communication, enforcement, and community engagement.

Despite the financial year closing on June 30, Governor Kibwana appealed to the National Treasury to allow Counties to spend the money in the new financial year.

“Even if the money is returned to the Treasury at the end of the financial year, we are asking the government to re-allocate the money so that it can be used for the purpose it was intended in the new financial year,” he said.

During the event, the Governor also assured residents of accountability and transparency in the issuance of donations given out by well-wishers to the County Emergency Response Committee (CERC).

“The items and money we have received will be fully accounted for to ensure transparency. We have a list of all donations and beneficiaries given to the Makueni County Assembly,” said the Governor.
