On June 5, 2020, the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) handed over a contract to ASAL Engineering and Consult Company for the construction of a 2.2 km runway and an administration block at the Kitale airstrip.
Speaking during the ceremony, KAA Regional Manager Walter Agong stated that the construction, initially expected to take 18 months, will be completed in 10 months to ensure the airstrip returns to its normal activities as soon as possible.
The project, valued at Ksh 221 million, will be carried out in two phases. The first phase will involve the construction of a standard 2.2 km runway, followed by the construction of an administration block, including a VIP lounge.
Devolution CS Eugene Wamalwa, who attended the ceremony, emphasized that the renovation will boost flight operations within the county and the region, ultimately benefiting the local economy.
Chair of the Council of Governors Wycliffe Oparanya and Busia Governor Sospeter Ojaamong were also present during the handing over of the contract.
