When it comes to beauty treatments during pregnancy, it's essential to be mindful of the ingredients used in various products. According to experts, certain ingredients can pose risks to both the mother and the unborn baby.

Published on June 6, 2020, a recent article highlighted four beauty ingredients that pregnant women should avoid.

1. Retinoids

Retinoids, a derivative of vitamin A, are commonly used in anti-aging products. However, they can be harmful during pregnancy, as they have been linked to an increased risk of birth defects. If you're trying to conceive, it's best to stop using any product containing retinoids. If you're already pregnant and using retinoids, discontinue their use immediately.

Safe alternatives to retinoids include soy, vitamin C, kojic acid, and glycolic acid.

2. Chemical Sunscreens

While not all sunscreen ingredients are harmful, some chemicals like avobenzone, homosalate, and oxybenzone have been linked to low birth weights, which can increase the risk of future health problems. To stay safe, opt for mineral-based sunscreens containing zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Dermatologists recommend using SPF 30 or lower and practicing sun protection by wearing protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses.

3. Parabens

Parabens are commonly found in body lotions, shampoos, and other personal care products. These chemicals mimic estrogen, a hormone essential for female reproductive health, and can cross the placenta, potentially harming the unborn baby. Research has linked fetal exposure to parabens to various developmental issues, including autistic-like symptoms and learning difficulties. To avoid parabens, choose products labeled as paraben-free.

4. Synthetic Fragrances

While not all fragrances are harmful, some contain phthalates, which can disrupt hormonal function and lead to miscarriages or sterility in adulthood. When shopping for beauty products, look for full disclosure of fragrance ingredients and avoid products with generic terms like 'parfum' or 'fragrance.'

By being aware of these potential risks, pregnant women can make informed choices about their beauty routines and prioritize their health and the health of their unborn babies.
