Published on June 6, 2020, a tender for the construction of the Sh40 billion Koru-Soin Dam in Kisumu County has been advertised, signaling a breakthrough in the project that has been stalled for decades.
The dam, located on the upstream of River Nyando at the border of Kisumu and Nandi counties, aims to provide 72,000 cubic meters of water for domestic and commercial use, as well as generate 2.5 Mega Watts of hydropower to boost the national grid.
According to the advertisement, the project will be implemented in two phases, with the construction work placed on an open international tender, while the supervision of the works reserved for Kenyan companies.
Despite previous attempts to kickstart the project being blocked by politicians and protests from locals, the National Water Harvesting and Storage Authority remains optimistic about the project's potential to provide a lasting solution to the perennial flooding in the Nyando basin.
